Given the fact that Accutane is a dangerous and defective drug proven to cause debilitating personal injury such as IBD or inflammatory bowel disease, has the acne treatment or acne medication been recalled? In a sense, no, and in a sense, yes -- though not by the Food and Drug Administration.
Instead, Accutane was removed from the market in 2009 by original manufacturer Roche Pharmaceuticals. Roche did not cite 5,000 pending lawsuits against the defective drug as its reason for doing so, nor did Roche cite growing public concern if not outcry against the defective drug, which even could lead to greater consumer protections via federal legislation, as has been urged by Accutane critics.
Instead, Roche simply pretended it was voluntarily recalling, or removing, the defective acne treatment from the market due to increased competition from makers of generic Accutane products such as Sotret, Claravis and Amnesteem. In other words, even though Roche was making billions of dollars in profits off its defective drug while innocent victims suffered, it was merely surrendering the marketplace to competitive rivals of its own free will.
If you believe that, you just might believe anything.
In truth, Accutane is in trouble, as are generic Accutane acne treatments. More and more Accutane lawsuits are being filed, and more victims are recovering financially for their losses, including a man whose was awarded over $25 million by a Philadelphia jury after he’d had to have his colon surgically removed due to an IBD or inflammatory bowel disease caused by Accutane.
And yet, remarkably, Accutane itself remains available -- not only in Canada but in many other countries. Roche only recalled the product in the United States and in 11 other countries. Yet it keeps selling Accutane to acne sufferers elsewhere in the world, as it’s done since 1982, for a total of 13 million patients.
Thus, Accutane has not been recalled in a global sense, nor have generic Accutane products been recalled anywhere, including America. Rather, Accutane has been withdrawn from the market only in America and in 11 other countries, leaving those elsewhere to suffer harmful Accutane side effects, not to mention the harm unsuspectingly take generic Accutane.
Recall? What recall? There’s money to be made selling defective drugs. If that means more people get an IBD such as Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis, greedy manufacturers seem to see this as collateral damage, with the bottom line being their enormous and ill-gained profits.
The true bottom line should be public safety. But though the threat of Accutane continues, so do Accutane lawsuits.
