Many Americans have suffered Crohn’s disease, a debilitating disorder of the bowels. These days that’s often due to harmful defective drug Accutane, whose side effects include Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, both of which are an inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD.

But Crohn’s disease has occurred before Accutane’s 1982 origins, including when then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower suffered it just before running for re-election in 1956. Eisenhower tried to keep it a secret at first but later needed surgery, and his condition became public. And he was re-elected.

More modern-day Crohn’s sufferers include Mike McCready, guitarist for big-selling rock band Pearl Jam, and ABC News journalist Cynthia McFadden, who’s been co-anchor of ABC’s Nightline and Primetime news magazine shows.

Other current victims include Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard of the NFL and the  magician known as Dynamo, whose real name is Stephen Frayne. A Crohn’s sufferer since childhood, Frayne has had to combat life-threatening complications of the disease.

Another Crohn’s sufferer is actress Shannon Doherty, who became a star on TV’s Beverly Hills 90210 in the 1990s and recently appeared as a contestant on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. Doherty has kept a low profile about her condition, though she acknowledged it in 1999.

One more celebrity victim of Crohn’s disease is singer Anastacia, who learned she had the disease at age 13 and has had a substantial part of her intestines surgically removed.

Some of today’s celebrities with Crohn’s, including McCready, McFadden and Garrard, have been active in campaigns to fight the disease and to raise money for such efforts. Other celebs may have kept it a secret, afraid that it might negatively impact their image.

It’s not known if any of the celebs mentioned here became afflicted with Crohn’s disease as a result of taking harmful defective drug Accutane, but the acne medication has caused bowel disease in at least one known star: actor James Marshall of Twin Peaks and A Few Good Men. He had to have his colon removed after taking acne treatment Accutane.
